Good packing is the difference between a smooth move and a box of broken crockery. Here are the techniques our packers use every day.
Start early and declutter
Begin with the rooms you use least and work forwards. The less you move, the less it costs — so donate or dispose of anything you don’t need before you pack.
Pack boxes properly
- Use small boxes for heavy items (books) and large boxes for light items (bedding)
- Fill gaps so nothing shifts in transit
- Don’t overfill — you should be able to close the lid flat
- Tape the bottom of every box well
Protect the fragile stuff
- Wrap glasses and china individually in packing paper
- Stand plates on their edge, not flat
- Use plenty of cushioning and mark boxes “Fragile”
- Keep an inventory of valuable items
Label everything
Write the room and contents on the side (not the top) of each box so labels stay visible when stacked. It makes unloading and unpacking far quicker.
